Wild Harvested Gumweed, Grindelia Tincture

Wild Harvested Gumweed, Grindelia Tincture

from $12.00

Freshly Wild Harvested Gumweed Tincture, Grindelia squarrosa, 50% pure grain alcohol and distilled water.

I wild harvest Grindelia each year in Eastern Washington, in extremely large patches. I harvest the top 5 inches of aerial growth when flowers are in 50% to full bloom. I only take a 1/4 of each plants flowers and leave most to feed pollinators and for the plant to reseed. I harvest just enough for a 1/2 gallon of tincture. In the fall I return to the patches to help scatter seed. I rotate patches each year as not to take from the same place every time. I hand dig roots in small quantities and always fill in the hole when done. Harvesting in the fall after the seeds have set allows me to scatter seeds to ensure the patch continues to grow. After harvest, I tincture right away. I macerate the chopped Gumweed in 50% alcohol and distilled water for 6 weeks. I strain then bottle and store in a cool dark cupboard.

Grindelia or Gumweed, has highly resinous flowers and leaves which has been long recognized as a lung medicine, Grindelia is useful for a number of chronic to subacute conditions. Commonly used in the treatment of bronchitis, airway constriction, raw and irritated pectoral membranes, Asthma, and dry cough. It is a relaxant, diuretic, expectorant, mildly sedative and warming.
