Evening Primrose Seed
Evening Primrose Seed
Latin name: Oenothera biennis
Plant Family: Evening Primrose (Onagraceae)
Lifespan: Biennial
Origin: Eastern North America
Growing: Grows just about everywhere, as long there is partial sun and well-drained soil. Start seeds any time, barely covering the soil. Direct sow.
Edibility: The young leaves can be eaten as a spring green. The 1-year-old roots are my favorite part of the plant. When baked, fried or steamed, they taste like parsnips. In my opinion, Evening primrose is the lowest maintenance food crop.
Medicinal uses: The seeds contain GLAs, which are healing for the skin.
Permaculture Uses: One of my top 5 favorite plants due to its functionality. It’s the most resilient of food crops, an oil crop (seeds), a pioneer plant to restore degraded soils and a pollinator attractor.
