Seeds are light dependent germinators, surface sow in early to mid-spring. tamp seeds down firmly with hand and keep well-watered. Germination should happen in 1-2 weeks. Plants are ready to be transplanted after the second or third true leaf grows. Elecampane grows to be quite large with a big root mass, give lots of space, rich compos, moist soils and a sunny location and it can grow for years to come. Beautiful Yellow flowers are loved by pollinators.
The medicinal root can be harvested after the 2nd or third year of growth. Cut the side roots and replant the crown. Traditionally used for lung infections, as an expectorant and a digestive aid as the fall harvested roots are high in inulin.
